Major sporting events, concerts, festivals, and other large gatherings can bring thousands of people together in one place. While the energy of a crowd can be part of the experience, large gatherings can also create unique safety and security considerations.

Whether you’re attending a major sporting event or a local celebration, staying aware of your surroundings and planning ahead are important aspects of crowd safety. Consider these tips before heading into a crowded event.

Stay Alert

• It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. Remain alert to what is happening around you and any changes that may require action. 
• Keep personal belongings secure and close to you. Consider carrying your wallet in a front or zippered pocket and keeping purses or bags where you can see them.
• Avoid placing personal belongings on the ground, where they can be forgotten, misplaced, or stolen.
• Listen for alarms and announcements, and follow instructions from event staff or security personnel. If directed to leave, do so promptly and avoid stopping for unnecessary belongings.

Know Your Exit Routes

• Upon entering a venue, familiarize yourself with the area and identify multiple exits and evacuation routes.
• If attending a seated event, take note of the closest exits and the path you would use to reach them.
• In the event of a fire or other emergency, follow directions from emergency personnel and focus on safely exiting the area.

Have a Plan if You Become Separated

• If attending with children or a group, identify an easy-to-recognize meeting place in case you become separated.
• Make sure children know not to leave the event area or go to the parking lot alone if they become separated from you.
• Take a current photo of your children before entering the event so you have a record of what they are wearing.
• Avoid using ATMs in congested areas when possible, and stay aware of your surroundings when handling cash or personal information.

Know Who to Turn to for Help

• Take note of where security professionals and event staff are stationed and how to identify them. 
• Teach children to seek help from a uniformed security professional, law enforcement officer, or clearly identified event staff member if they become separated from you.
