Detection Dog Spotlight: Leo Barton and K9 Ivy
Three-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever Ivy knows how to make an impression. Friendly and affectionate, she has become a familiar face to employees across the campus where she and her handler, Leo, are assigned. But when it is time to work, Ivy’s focus shifts to the task at hand.
Ivy is Leo’s newest canine partner, following the retirement of his previous canine, Cannoli, after nearly seven years of service. Paired since July 2025, Leo and Ivy have spent the past year building the trust and communication that help define an effective detection dog team. For Leo, it is the latest partnership in a career spent working alongside canines.
A Career Built Around Canines
Leo began his career in the United States Air Force, serving as a military working dog handler throughout his six-year enlistment. He later entered federal law enforcement, where he spent nearly half of his almost 35-year career assigned to a K9 program. Over the years, Leo has trained, handled, and partnered with several canines, each with a different personality and working style.
After retiring from federal law enforcement, Leo thought his days as a canine handler might be behind him. That changed when a former K9 colleague reached out and asked whether he would be interested in working with dogs again. For someone who had spent much of his adult life alongside canines, the opportunity was an easy one to accept.
Getting to Know Ivy
Despite Leo’s decades of experience, every new canine partnership begins with learning how to work together. Ivy quickly brought her own personality to the team. Her friendly nature makes her a favorite among employees, many of whom look forward to seeing her during the workday. That social side is balanced by a strong drive to work.
Their daily assignment covers a large campus, where Leo and Ivy move between buildings conducting security sweeps, screening incoming deliveries, investigating unattended or suspicious items, and supporting event screenings and other security needs. When it is time to search, Ivy understands there is work to do.
Building Skills Through Consistent Training
Regular training helps Leo and Ivy reinforce their communication and maintain the skills they rely on during operational searches. Ivy approaches her daily training sessions with enthusiasm and determination, working to locate target odors and pinpoint the source.
Even when a target odor is positioned above her reach, Ivy remains determined to locate its source. She will stretch as high as she can to pinpoint its location and provide a clear indication. That persistence is part of the working style Leo has come to know since the two were paired.
Between covering significant ground across the campus, conducting security sweeps, performing searches, and training, Ivy stays active throughout the workday. Her energy carries her from one task to the next, while the time she and Leo spend working together continues to strengthen their partnership. And when the workday is over, another side of Ivy emerges.
From Working Partner to Family
The drive home gives Ivy a chance to settle in after a busy day. For Leo, one of his favorite moments often comes as they near their neighborhood. Ivy will rest her head on his shoulder, a simple routine that reflects the bond they have developed since becoming partners.Once home, however, relaxation can be short-lived.
Waiting for Ivy are two familiar canine companions: Leo’s retired canine partner, Cannoli, and rescue dog Fiddle. Ivy quickly trades the working day for time running, wrestling, and playing with them in the yard. It is a fitting balance for a canine who brings enthusiasm to both sides of her life.
Leo has worked alongside canines throughout much of his career, but each partnership has its own personality. With Ivy, he has begun another chapter built on consistent training, time together, and the trust that develops between handler and canine.
For Ivy, that means a day spent focused on the work at hand, followed by a ride home with Leo and playtime with Cannoli and Fiddle before they do it all again.
