Judy Tang joined Allied Universal about a year ago as Controller for the company’s ancillary businesses (Growth Platforms). As Controller, she oversees the finances of seven business units totaling more than $300 million, identifies opportunities in increasing revenue, profitability and cash flow as well as partners with the company’s leadership team to lead management control process and compliance. Her top priorities as Controller is to help grow the business while expanding margins and growing the talent on her team.

Judy started her career in the aerospace industry straight out of college. As the only female and minority on her team, she faced many challenges because she worked in a male-dominated environment. However, as years passed, she became more and more confident and rose through the ranks-- all the way up to Controller reporting directly to the Vice President of the company.

“When I first started my career, I definitely felt intimidated and afraid to make mistakes or speak up,” said Judy. “Over the years and with guidance from my mentors, I no longer see myself as different. I’ve learned that teams can achieve much more when there is diversity amongst its members. We are able to share different viewpoints and enhance creativity.”

Judy believes that it is extremely important to recognize diversity in the security industry because our clients come from all different industries and walks of life.

“At Allied Universal, we need to be just as diverse as our client base in order to promote growth and understanding,” said Judy.

Judy definitely sees the benefits of working in a diverse environment as there is a “higher sense of awareness and alignment of vision among teams because we have a better understanding of each other.”

“This is why mentorship is so important,” said Judy. “I try to mentor young professionals by helping women and minorities become more confident and assertive in their roles.”
